GEO For Roofers

Get Found in ChatGPT,
Gemini, and AI Search Platforms

I'm Joey Randazzo, the owner. Our agency is built a little different.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving your roofing company’s visibility inside AI-powered answer engines, not just in traditional search results.

When a homeowner searches for “best roofer near me” or “emergency roof repair in [your city],” they might find your business in:

  • AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Bing Copilot
  • Google’s AI Overviews (AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional search results)
  • Google’s AI Mode (a conversational chat-style search experience)

The shift is simple: customers are getting answers faster, often without clicking through multiple websites.

Why GEO Matters for Your Roofing Business

How people search and gather information online has changed significantly recently with evolutions in technology. Here’s what that means for your roofing company:

Your Customers Are Searching Differently

Instead of browsing a list of blue link search results, homeowners now ask AI tools detailed questions like: “I need a roofer who guarantees their work and can do emergency repairs in Portland.” AI tools then pull together a shortlist of companies that match those needs.

Being First Matters More Than Ever

When an AI tool shows 2–5 roofing companies in its answer, the first one listed typically gets the most clicks. In Google’s case, AI Overview results can appear over sponsored results like Google Ads or Local Service Ads, and snippets like Local Map Packs, People Also Ask sections, etc. Appearing prominently in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and ChatGPT search results is more meaningful to your business’s ability to drive consistent revenue, and is more competitive than ever before.

How AI Tools Find Your Roofing Business

Different AI platforms look for information in different places. Understanding where they search helps you show up in the right places.

ChatGPT & OpenAI Tools

ChatGPT pulls heavily from local directories and review platforms. When someone searches for a roofer, ChatGPT often ranks results by:

  • Yelp rating and review count (5.0 ratings typically get top placement)
  • Local business listings and directories
  • Website content and citations

This means investing in your Yelp profile and getting quality reviews directly impacts your visibility in ChatGPT.

Google & Gemini (AI Overviews & AI Mode)

Google’s AI pulls from sources it owns or trusts, including:

  • Your Google Business Profile (posts, photos, hours, business description, services)
  • YouTube videos and transcripts
  • Your website content

This means keeping your Google Business Profile & website content active and up-to-date is critical for appearing in Google’s AI answers.

Content Marketing Strategies That Work

Google & Gemini (AI Overviews & AI Mode)

AI tools want to know who’s behind the content. Add a brief author section to your blog posts or service pages. Example:

“John Smith has been a licensed roofer in Portland for 25+ years, specializing in residential and commercial roof repairs. He’s completed over 2,000 projects and holds certifications in asphalt shingles, metal roofing, and emergency storm repair.”

This simple credibility statement helps AI engines understand that your content comes from a real expert.

Use Real Proof: Reviews, Photos & Success Stories

Don’t just tell people you’re good—show them. Gather:

  • Before-and-after photos from recent projects
  • Customer testimonials and reviews
  • Case studies (even simple ones: “Residential roof replacement in Vancouver, completed in 3 days”)

Here’s an example on one of our clients’ websites:

Then use these on your website and Google Business Profile. Better yet, create service-area-specific pages with photos and testimonials from that area. A “Roof Repair in Vancouver” page with Vancouver customer photos is more powerful than generic content.

Write Like You Talk

Avoid overly technical language. Be direct and helpful. Roofers are naturally good at this: you’re problem-solvers who tell people how it is. Keep that tone in your writing.

Example of good roofing writing:

“If your roof is leaking, you need to act fast. Water damage gets worse every day. We can inspect your roof the same day you call and give you a clear repair or replacement estimate. Most jobs are done within a week.”

Break Content Into Scannable Chunks

Use short paragraphs, subheadings, and bullet points. AI tools (and humans) find it easier to extract and understand information when it’s organized clearly.

Instead of a long paragraph, use:

  • Short sentences (1–2 lines)
  • Clear subheadings
  • Bullet lists
  • Bold text for key points

Use AI as an Editor, Not a Writer

You can use ChatGPT or Gemini to help organize and polish your content—but not to write it from scratch.

Here’s how:

  • Write down your thoughts and experience in your own words. Rough notes are fine.
  • Upload your notes to ChatGPT or Gemini
  • Ask it to organize, clarify, and make it more readable
  • Review and add back any specific details or stories that matter

Ultimately, Google values content written by humans for humans. However, technology continues to rapidly develop, and Google themselves has implemented their proprietary AI Gemini into several of their products, such as Google Docs. So it’s fine to use AI to improve your legibility, but your own unique expertise and experience should always shine through.

Follow E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

Google and AI tools favor content that demonstrates:

  • Experience: Real projects you’ve completed, challenges you’ve solved
  • Expertise: Your knowledge and certifications
  • Authoritativeness: Reviews, testimonials, and industry recognition
  • Trustworthiness: Clear guarantees, transparent pricing, honest communication

Weave these into your content naturally. Don’t just list credentials—show them through real examples.

Create YouTube Content

You don’t need to be a pro, but it’s worth knowing Google’s Gemini scrapes YouTube transcripts. You don’t need fancy production—just helpful content.

Ideas for roofing videos:

  • How to spot roof damage before it becomes expensive
  • How much does a residential roof repair typically cost in portland, oregon? [and provide a breakdown]
  • Storm damage: what to do immediately
  • Shingle replacement vs. full roof replacement: which do you need?
  • How to prepare your roof for winter
  • Common roofing mistakes homeowners make

Publish consistently (even just 1–2 videos per month), and videos can be under 5 minutes as well. The more content you create, the more likely someone searching will find you in an AI answer.

Technical Best Practices

Add Schema (Structured Data)

Different AI platforms look for information in different places. Understanding where they search helps you show up in the right places.

Schema is code you add to your website that helps search engines and AI tools understand your content. It’s not magic, but it clarifies key aspects of your business to crawlers from AI Tools.

Key schemas for roofers:

  • Local business schema: Tells Google/AI tools you’re a local business with hours, phone, and an address/service area
  • FAQ schema: Pairs questions with answers on your pages
  • Service schema: Describes the services you offer

Schema can be tricky to properly deploy. Structured data coding is often long, and one error prevents it from being interpreted correctly from search engines and AI crawlers. Working with a developer to properly deploy schema will ensure search engines and AI crawlers properly read the coding.

Check Your robots.txt File

Your robots.txt file tells crawlers (including AI bots) what they can and can’t access on your site. Make sure it’s not accidentally blocking AI tools.

If you see a line that says “Disallow: *” for ChatGPT, Gemini, or other AI bots, remove it. You want to be found in AI answers.

Create an XML Sitemap

A sitemap tells search engines and AI crawlers which pages on your site are most important. It should include:

  • Your main service pages (roof repair, replacement, emergency service)
  • Location/service-area pages (Portland, Vancouver, etc.)
  • Blog posts and resources

WordPress and most CMS platforms generate this automatically. Check that it exists and is submitted to Google Search Console.

Optimize Image & Video Filenames

When you upload photos or videos, use descriptive, keyword-rich filenames. This helps AI tools understand what they’re looking at.

Examples:

  • Good: “residential-roof-repair-portland-before-after.jpg”
  • Bad: “IMG_12345.jpg”
  • Good: “emergency-storm-damage-roof-repair-vancouver.mp4”
  • Bad: “video1.mp4”

Local GEO: Google Business Profile & Yelp

Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is critical for appearing in Google’s AI Overviews/AI Mode. Keep it active and complete:

2-4 posts per month

Share updates about your services, seasonal tips, or recent projects. You’d want to expand these topics to about 200 words, but some starting point ideas are below:

  • “Spring roof inspection season is here. We’re offering free inspections this month.”
  • “Storm damage? We offer 24/7 emergency roof repair. Call now.”
  • “Just completed a full roof replacement in Portland. Check out the before/after photos.”

Update Your Hours (Especially if You Offer Emergency Service)

If you do emergency repairs, set your hours to 24/7 or clearly note when you’re available. This helps you show up when someone searches “emergency roof repair” at 2 AM.

Write a Strong Business Description

Take advantage of the full 750-character limit. Include:

  • What you do (residential, commercial, repairs, replacements)
  • Your service areas (Portland, Vancouver, nearby towns)
  • Key differentiators (emergency service, warranty, certifications)
  • Years in business or number of projects completed

Example:

Family-owned and locally operated, South Jersey Roofing Pros provides expert residential and commercial roofing across South Jersey. As the area’s only Fortified Certified roofer, we specialize in high-performance systems, including Owens Corning asphalt shingles, TPO, EPDM, and standing seam metal roofing.

Add Photos & Videos

Upload before-and-after photos from recent projects. Use descriptive filenames and captions.

Example caption:

“Residential roof replacement in Portland. Old asphalt shingles replaced with architectural shingles. Project completed in 3 days.”

Yelp (Critical for ChatGPT Results)

ChatGPT heavily favors Yelp when showing local service providers. A strong Yelp profile can directly boost your visibility in ChatGPT answers.

Key points:

  • Aim for a 5.0 rating (or as close as possible). Even 4.7–4.8 can push you to a lower tier in ChatGPT search results.
  • Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews on Yelp
  • Respond professionally to all reviews (positive and negative)
  • Keep your profile complete: hours, photos, services, pricing info

Note: Yelp can be “pay to win” in some cases. But if you see it repeatedly cited in ChatGPT’s search results, it may be worth investing in.

FAQ Section

No. You most likely do not need a complete website redesign.

Many roofing companies with older, legacy websites still show up in AI Overviews and ChatGPT results. What matters more is:

  • Your Google Business Profile is complete and active
  • You have strong reviews on Yelp and Google
  • Your website clearly answers common questions
  • Your site is technically sound (no broken links, proper setup)
  • You’re creating helpful content (blog posts, videos, case studies)

Focus on these fundamentals before considering a redesign.

Not to write it from scratch. Use AI as an editor and organizer, not a writer.

Here’s why: AI-generated content from scratch is generic. Anyone can do it. AI tools and Google favor content that includes your real experience, specific projects, and unique perspective.

Better approach:

  • Write your thoughts and experience in your own words
  • Use ChatGPT or Gemini to organize and polish it
  • Add specific details: project names, customer stories, before-and-after photos
  • Publish quality content (1 good blog per month beats 4 generic ones)

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) focuses on ranking in traditional Google search results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on appearing in AI-powered answers.

The good news: many strategies overlap. Strong content, good reviews, and a complete Google Business Profile help with both SEO and GEO.

It depends on your starting point. If your Google Business Profile is complete and you have good reviews, you might already be appearing in ChatGPT mentions and AI Overviews.

If you’re starting from scratch, expect 2–3 months to see meaningful results. Consistency matters: regular posts, new content, and ongoing reviews all help.

No, but it helps. Google’s Gemini scrapes YouTube transcripts, so video content can boost your visibility. However, a strong website and Google Business Profile can get you found without YouTube.

If you have time, start a YouTube channel. If not, focus on your website and GBP first.

What if I’m not getting reviews?

Reviews are critical for GEO visibility. Here’s how to get more:

  • After completing a job, ask satisfied customers to leave a review on Google and Yelp
  • Make it easy: provide a QR code or direct link to your Google Business Profile
  • Send a follow-up email a few days after the job is done
  • Offer a small incentive (discount on next service) for leaving a review
  • Respond to all reviews, both positive and negative, with professionalism

First, check where they’re getting visibility:

  • Search for your service in ChatGPT and note which sites appear (check citations)
  • Search in Google’s AI Mode and see which companies are listed
  • Look at their Google Business Profile, Yelp, and website

Then focus on the gaps in your own presence:

  • Do you have a complete Google Business Profile? Update it.
  • Do you have reviews? Start asking customers.
  • Is your website outdated? Add fresh content.
  • Are you on Yelp? Create or optimize your profile.
  • Do you have before-and-after photos? Upload them.

Quick Action Checklist

Use this checklist to prioritize your GEO efforts:

  • ☐ Complete your Google Business Profile (all fields filled, hours accurate, description strong)
  • ☐ Upload 10+ photos to your Google Business Profile (with descriptive filenames)
  • ☐ Ask 5 recent customers to leave Google and Yelp reviews
  • ☐ Check your robots.txt file (make sure AI bots aren’t blocked)
  • ☐ Verify you have an XML sitemap
  • ☐ Write one blog post about a common roofing question (500–800 words, conversational tone)
  • ☐ Create or optimize your Yelp profile
  • ☐ Add an FAQ section to your homepage or main service pages
  • ☐ Gather 5 before-and-after photos from recent projects
  • ☐ Post on your Google Business Profile (at least 2–4 times per month going forward)
  • ☐ Consider starting a YouTube channel (optional but helpful)
  • ☐ Set up Google Analytics 4 event tracking to measure AI referral traffic

Final Notes

Quality over quantity. One well-written blog post with real photos and your expertise beats four generic posts written by AI.

Consistency matters. Post on your Google Business Profile regularly. Respond to reviews. Create content when you can. Small, consistent efforts add up.

You don’t need to be perfect. Many roofing companies with “legacy” websites still show up in AI answers. Focus on the fundamentals: complete profiles, good reviews, helpful content.

Test it yourself. Search for roofing services in your area on ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode. See where you show up and where competitors appear. That’s your roadmap.
