Think about how people search for web designers. They’re probably thinking about what they can do to increase revenue and land on the obvious … Improving their website.

They pull out their smartphone, hop onto Google and type in something like “Web Designer Near Me” – the FIRST thing to show up is the Maps area of Google called the Google Local Pack. The web designers that show up here “win” and get the most phone calls.

When business owners are looking for web designers, they often use the language of “best web designers near me” or “best web designers in Portland”.

The web designers that rank in the Maps area for these keywords get the most website visitors and phone calls.

When Someone Types Questions Into Google Like "How Do I Find the Best Web Designer in Portland?" You Show Up Here …

Business owners ask tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of questions on Google each day. Questions like…

  • “What’s the best web design to capture people’s attention?”
  • “How many pages should my website have?”
  • “How do I tell if my website is optimized”

Ranking for these keywords in Google proves that your website is an “authority” and can be trusted.

People Are Searching Differently For Web Designers Than They Used To

Just take a look and see the increase in people searching for “web designers near me” over the last five years.

This screenshot above comes from a tool called Google Trends (a tool created by Google itself). You can see the drastic increase in the number of people searching for “web designers near me.”

At the end of the day, you want more business owners in your city to know that you exist. Whenever they do a Google search online around web designers, you want to show up over your competitors.

How Do You Get Tangible Results With Web Designer SEO Services?

Step 1: Comprehensive SEO Audit

Most SEO companies skip this step. And the truth is, it’s the most important step of all!

How can you get your web design business where you want it to be if you don’t even know where you are?

We recommend doing a comprehensive SEO audit to determine:

  • Your current SEO performance
  • Your current SEO errors
  • What your local competitors are doing
  • Your technical SEO performance
  • And more

Step 2: Create a Roadmap Based on Data

Now we’ve got a ton of great data from the SEO audit and the local SEO visibility audit.

SEO for web designers should be strategized based on data. Most other SEO companies don’t do this! They just take a “wild guess” and hope their strategy will work.

We recommend creating a comprehensive roadmap based on the data. If the data shows that your web designer website is loading especially slowly (which, by the way, is negatively impacting performance), you’ll definitely want to fix that first!

Step 3: Implement Highest Priority Changes First

Now comes the fun part!

Not all SEO activities are created equal.

Updating the alt text for images on a blog post from 2013 isn’t going to be nearly as impactful as improving your website’s home page content.

That’s why, based on the data we gather, you need to grab the “low-hanging fruit” opportunities first.

You don’t have a Google Business Profile set up? Get that done asap! You don’t have Service Pages specifically for different industries? You should probably build those first before worrying about your About Us Page’s images.

Step 4: Local SEO Best Practices & Content Creation at Scale

Local SEO for web designers comes down to these three things:

  1. Consistent information that Google trusts
  2. Accurate information
  3. Authority

Does your business have a different phone number on your website than what’s on your Facebook page? If so, that’s a big red flag for Google.

Should Google decide to rank your web design business, it can’t trust that if a user picks up the phone and calls the number on your site, they’ll actually get through to you.

That’s why having consistent NAPs on high-authority directories across the internet is critical.

When we start talking about “authority,” that’s where the importance of content comes in. If you’re creating content that answers the questions your target audience is asking, Google will see your web design business as more authoritative than one that does not have much content on its site.

Step 5: Meticulously Track Data

The goal of SEO for web designers is to have a tangible impact on your business. To increase visitors to your website. To keep your phone ringing. And to ultimately have those activities lead to an increase in your revenue.

To ensure your web designer SEO campaign is performing optimally, you’ve got to track data. Build a comprehensive dashboard that gives insights into your:

  • Keyword rankings
  • Phone calls
  • Website visitors
  • And other important KPIs

Top 4 Common SEO Mistakes Made by Web Designers

Mistake 1: They Don’t Fill Out Their Google Business Profile in Detail

Comprehensive content is a “must-have” for increasing your local visibility. Always be sure to leverage any chance you have to share information about your business.

Try adding photos of your office space on your Google Business Profiles. Or do you go to your clients for consultations? Make that clear.

Remember to cover all attributes of your business. Use every allowable character when you’re writing your business description. Give your potential clients all the details they need to feel comfortable visiting or calling your business.

Mistake 2: They Don’t List All of Their Services Properly on Their Website

Does your website have service pages? Are they just pages with bullet lists of your services? Or do they give your potential clients the information they need to know how you can help them?

If it’s the bullet list, then now’s the time to update your services.

Remember, Google wants comprehensive information. It’s vital to the algorithms and the only way to boost your local visibility and rankings for valuable keywords in your industry.

By creating a main services page with separate links dedicated to each of your service pages, you’re giving Google and your potential clients as much information as possible about what your web design business has to offer.

Mistake 3: They Fail to Create Data-Driven Content That Adds Value to Their Target Audience

You likely have a good idea of what your target audience is searching for online. But get this: When you actually conduct keyword research, you may very well find that your target audience is looking at entirely different topics and issues than you originally thought.

This is why data is so critical. The only way to reach your target audience is by creating content that’s both comprehensive and backed by data. That way, you’re answering the key questions your target audience is asking — while letting Google know that you’re an authority in the web design industry.

Mistake 4: They Don’t Have a Repeatable Process for SEO

SEO isn’t a “one-and-done.” It’s a continuing process that, when done consistently, will drive more traffic and leads to your website.

If some of your web pages are performing much better than others, chances are a different formula was used on those pages.

Identifying what works — and what doesn’t — is instrumental in helping you create a strategic plan for success.

Web Designers SEO Services Shouldn't Be 🍪 Cookie-Cutter — Everything Is 100% Customized To Your Business

Web designer SEO isn’t like other types of SEO. But, unfortunately, many other SEO companies treat it like it is. They use the same standard “tips and tricks” that they use in other industries, thinking that it’ll work with web designers. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

At SEO Growth Partners, we treat your business as unique — because it is. We take an individualized approach to each industry (such as web designers), to your specific city (Minneapolis might be different from a smaller town in Missouri), and to your specific website (is your website built on WordPress or Webflow?).

5 Tactical Local SEO Strategies for Yoga Studios

Strategy 1: Google Business Profile Optimizations

This is an example of a web designer’s Google Business Profile:

Well, this is an example of the front-end of a Google Business Profile. The part that Google searchers can see.

Okay, before we go any further, let’s back it up:

Why do Google Business Profiles matter for web designers? Google Business Profiles are critical ranking factors if you want to rank in the Google Local Pack. In case you forgot what the Google Local Pack is, here’s a screenshot:

web designer portland GLP

Optimizing your Google Business Profile helps your business show up here.

And when you show up in the Google Local Pack, you WIN — meaning you get more phone calls and website visitors than your competitors.

So, how do you optimize your Google Business Profile so potential customers can find you in the Google Local Pack?

One word: Comprehensiveness.

The best way to optimize your Google Business Profile is to provide the most comprehensive information possible.

And this can be done throughout the sections on your site, including:

  • Your categories
  • Your main description
  • Your services
  • Your products
  • Your photos

Check out this quick example that highlights the difference between being comprehensive and not being comprehensive:

Let’s consider your main description as an example. You may be inclined to write a sentence like… “We are a team of web designers that is ready to help you get more business.”

That is just one sentence… and a boring one at that. Google allows 750 characters for your main description. And you want to use them up! Do you specialize in SEO? Do you serve both large and small businesses? What’s your average turnaround time?

Answering EVERY single possible question your audience may ask equals comprehensive.

Strategy 2: On-Page SEO for Your Homepage and Location Pages

On-page SEO for web designers is just a fancy way of describing the content on your website.

It includes things such as:

  • Your title tags
  • Your meta description
  • Your images
  • Your header tags (H1, H2, H3)
  • Internal and external links
  • And basically anything else that you can add to a website page!

Why does on-page SEO for web designers matter? Because Google cares about it, that’s why!

For single-location web designers, the most important page on your website, from a local SEO perspective, is the homepage. For multi-location web designers, the most important pages on your website are your location pages.

When doing on-page SEO for these pages, you’ll want to implement SEO-friendliness through the use of keywords — while also providing as much comprehensive information as possible to the user (and Google).

For example, instead of a title tag like “Whitney’s Web Design – 417.333.1111,” you can provide more context to Google by writing something like “Professional Web Designers in Downtown Portland – Whitney’s Web Design.”

Strategy 3: Website Architecture Best Practices

Pro-tip: This is an underrated SEO strategy for web designers. Your website architecture and your sitemap are intimately connected.

It works like this. Google crawls your sitemap to understand your website architecture, which in turn allows Google to understand what your web design website is about.

Here’s what a sitemap might look like:

If this looks confusing, don’t worry. All you need to know is that when Google looks at a sitemap like this, it’s formulating what your website is about (which is a huge deal for your local SEO).

The main thing to know is that your website’s structure should make sense hierarchically. Let’s use two of the services that web designers offer – 1) web pages and 2) mobile apps.

Where should these pages live on your site? For starters, you should probably have a “services” page that has a URL structure similar to .com/services/

Now, any services that you offer (such as web pages) should live UNDER this main services page. See below:

  • .com/services/web-pages
  • .com/services/mobile-apps

This seems obvious, but many websites do this wrong. There’s no vertical architecture. Instead, every page lives directly under the homepage. See below:

  • .com/services/
  • .com/web-pages/
  • .com/mobile-apps/

With this structure, it’s not clear to Google that “web pages” is a service that you offer. It’s just another page on your site!

Strategy 4: Content Creation at Scale

Here’s where it gets fun. Web designers search for thousands of questions on Google every day.

Some are very local:

  • Best web designers in Portland
  • Best web design near Portland

Some are generic:

  • How do I create a website?
  • How do I design my website?
  • Do I need a website?
  • How many pages does my website need?

If you answer these types of questions through comprehensive blog articles on your website, it will do two things:

  1. You might rank in Google for these keywords that people are searching — and this drives traffic.
  2. Google will take notice and see your web designer site as an authority over your competition. Google will think, “Wow, this site is answering all of these web design-related questions users are asking. Therefore, their website is more valuable than the other local competitors who haven’t answered any questions.”

Strategy 5: User Experience is a Bigger Deal Than You Think - Stop the Keyword Stuffing!

The old days of SEO are gone. Keyword stuffing… PBN link building… all the stuff that used to work just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Google’s getting smarter. And it’s starting to understand that user experience on a site is important.

What does this mean for you as a web designer?

  • Make it easy for users to find what they’re looking for. They shouldn’t have to spend five minutes figuring out if you offer app design or not.
  • Make it easy for users to contact you. Your phone number should be obvious and clickable on a mobile device. Consider offering online scheduling, so someone can easily set up an appointment for a consultation. Do anything you can to make the user’s experience SUPER easy.
  • When writing content, be sure you actually offer value to your reader. Gone are the days of outsourcing writers who produce weirdly vague, keyword-stuffed articles that don’t even make sense. Your content should thoroughly answer the user’s questions and make it worth the time they took to read it.

FAQs About SEO Services for Web Designers

What Is Web Designers SEO?

SEO for web designers is a form of marketing that helps web designers increase their visibility in search engines, particularly Google.

The specific SEO strategies that are used for web designers vary greatly (which is why all web designers SEO is NOT created equal).

Strategies include:

  • Keyword research
  • On-page SEO
  • Off-page SEO
  • Google Maps optimizations
  • Local SEO
  • Content creation
  • Landing page creation
  • PR
  • And more

Why Is SEO for Web Designers Important?

SEO for web designers is important because it allows you to get in front of your target audience (customers who are looking to improve their sites RIGHT NOW).

Think about how social media marketing for web designers works: People are scrolling through Instagram or Facebook and stumble upon an advertisement for a web designer in their city. They might be actively looking for one, but it’s unlikely.

On the other hand, SEO puts you in front of motivated clients looking for what you have to offer:

SEO for web designers allows you to show up in Google for people actively looking for a web designer. People searching for “best web designer near me” or “web designers in downtown Portland.” Ranking for those keywords has a MUCH higher conversion than people scrolling on Instagram.

How Long Does SEO for Web Designers Take to Work?

Web designer SEO can take one week to six months for you to start seeing results. It depends on a variety of factors like:

  • The size of the city you’re in
  • How long your website has been around
  • How high your website’s “domain authority” is
  • How your current SEO is performing
  • And much more

Some of our clients have seen 2x – 3x the phone calls within a month after starting their SEO campaign. Other clients don’t see noticeable increases in phone calls for two to threemonths.

Think about it this way, though:

If everyone could simply make a couple of tweaks on their website and rank overnight for the HIGHEST value keywords out there, like “best web designer in New York City” then the internet would go haywire.

Good things take time. Google built its algorithms that way for a reason.

What Web Designer SEO KPIs Should We Track?

SEO for web designers should be meticulously tracked.

You want to know, with absolute certainty, that the money you’re investing in your SEO campaign is working for your web design business.

Because of that, you need to track certain metrics such as:

  • Keyword rankings: Is your site ranking on Page 1 of Google for your most important keywords? How are your keyword rankings changing from week to week? Month to month?
  • Organic website traffic: Is your organic website traffic from Google going up or down? Which keywords are driving the most traffic?
  • Online lead submissions: Have you been seeing more online leads? How are they changing month over month?
  • Phone calls: Are you getting more phone calls coming from people searching on Google? How are your phone calls changing over time?

What Type of Content Should Web Designers Websites Have?

SEO for web designers should include content that your target audience is searching for:

How do we know what keywords/content your target audience is searching for? We use advanced software and tools that give us insider information and data. We, for example, know that 27,600,000 people per month (on average) search for “best mobile app designer in Portland.”

So, with that being said, we do extensive keyword research to find the topics/questions that people have.

Questions like:

  • “Who are the best web designers in Portland?”
  • “Do I need to update my website?”

If you create content that answers these questions, then you can potentially rank in Google when people search for these.

Google will favor your site more than competitors because Google will have more trust in your site.

Do Web Designers Need To Know SEO?

No. Web designers have plenty of other things to focus on.

Knowing how to do SEO the right way is a highly specialized skill that takes training and experience.

Think of it this way… Can any old “Joe” create a web page?

Leave the SEO for web designers to the professionals.
