When Someone Types "Yoga Studios Near Me" Into Google, You Show Up Here …

Think about how people search for yoga classes. They’re probably feeling a bit stiff while watching some Netflix on the couch, so they pull out their smartphone.

They go to Google and type in something like “Yoga Studio Near Me” – the FIRST thing to show up is the Maps area of Google called the Google Local Pack. The studios that show up here “win” and get the most phone calls.

When Someone Types "Best Yoga Studios in Portland" Into Google, You Show Up Here …

When yoga lovers are looking for classes, they often use the language of “best yoga studio near me” or “best yoga studio in Portland.”

The studios that rank in the Maps area for these keywords get the most website visitors and phone calls.

When Someone Types Questions Into Google Like "How Do I Find the Best Chiropractor," You Show Up Here …

When Someone Types Questions Into Google Like "Is Yoga Hard?" You Show Up Here …

Yoga students ask tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of questions on Google each day. Questions like…

  • “What is hot yoga?”
  • “Does yoga help you lose weight?”
  • “How do I clean my yoga mat?”

Ranking for these keywords in Google proves that your website is an “authority” and can be trusted.

People Are Searching Differently For Yoga Studios Than They Used To

Just take a look and see the increase in people searching for “yoga studio near me” over the last decade.

This screenshot above comes from a tool called Google Trends (a tool created by Google itself). You can see the drastic increase in the number of people searching for “yoga studio near me.”

How Do You Get Tangible Results With Yoga Studios SEO Services?

Step 1: Comprehensive SEO Audit

Most SEO companies fail to complete this step. But it’s the most important step of all!

How can you get where you want to be if you don’t even know where you are?

We recommend doing a comprehensive SEO audit to discover:

  • Your current SEO performance
  • Your current SEO errors
  • What your local competitors are doing
  • Your technical SEO performance
  • And more

Step 2: Create a Roadmap Based on Data

We’ve now collected the data we need from the SEO audit and the local SEO visibility audit.

SEO for yoga studios should be strategized based on data. Most other SEO companies don’t do this! They base their strategy on a “hunch” that something will work, rather than the data that tells us what will actually work.

We recommend creating a comprehensive SEO roadmap based on the data. If the data shows that your website has really slow load times (which is negatively impacting performance), you should probably fix that first!

Step 3: Implement Highest Priority Changes First

This is where the magic happens:

Not all SEO strategies are created equal.

Updating the alt text for images on a blog post from 2015 won’t be as impactful as improving your home page’s content.

Therefore, based on the data, targeting the “low-hanging fruit” opportunities first will be most beneficial.

If you don’t have a Google Business Profile set up, you should probably make one! If you don’t have service pages specifically for “Hatha Yoga” and “Yin Yoga,”  you should probably add those first before worrying about adding images to your About Us Page.

Step 4: Local SEO Best Practices & Content Creation at Scale

Local SEO for yoga studios comes down to the following:

  • Authority
  • Accurate information
  • Consistent information that Google trusts

If your business has a different address on your website than what’s on your Facebook page, that puts up a red flag for Google.

Google needs to trust that if a customer finds your address on their search engine, the customer will actually make it to your front door. Conflicting information can cause you to rank lower than your competitors.

Having consistent NAPs on high-authority directories across the internet is critical.

When it comes to “authority,” that’s where your content comes in. If you consistently add content to your website that answers the questions that your target audience has, Google will see your business as more authoritative than a yoga studio that does not have much content on its site.

Step 5: Meticulously Track Data

The goal of SEO is to have a tangible impact on your yoga studio. You want to:

  • Increase website visitors
  • Increase phone calls
  • Have those activities lead to increased revenue

Tracking data is a surefire way to ensure your SEO campaign is performing well. Building a comprehensive dashboard is critical as it gives you insights into your:

  • Keyword rankings
  • Website visitors
  • Phone calls
  • And other important KPIs

Top 4 Common SEO Mistakes Made by Yoga Studios

Mistake 1: They Don’t Fill Out Their Google Business Profile in Detail

Comprehensive content is critical to increasing your local visibility. Always leverage any opportunity to share information about your business.

How do you do this?

Why not add photos of your studio space on your Google Business Profiles? Show your potential clients what sets your yoga studio apart from others in the area.

Remember to cover all attributes of your business. Utilize all allowable characters to give your business description, giving your potential clients all of the information they need to feel comfortable visiting or calling your studio.

Mistake 2: They Don’t List All of Their Services Properly on Their Website

Does your website have service pages? Do they give your potential clients enough information to know how you can help them? Or is it a page with a bullet list of your services?

If it’s the bullet list, then it’s time to update your services.

Remember, Google is looking for comprehensive information. It’s extremely important to the algorithms and the only way to increase your local visibility and rankings for valuable keywords in your industry.

By creating a main services page with separate links to web pages dedicated to each service, you’re providing Google and potential clients as much information as possible about what your yoga studio has to offer.

Mistake 3: They Fail to Create Data-Driven Content That Adds Value to Their Target Audience

You probably have an idea of what your target audience is searching for online — but when you conduct keyword research, you may find that your target audience is looking at entirely different topics and issues than you originally thought.

This is why data matters. The only way to reach your target audience is to create comprehensive, data-backed content. This way, you answer the questions your target audience is looking for, while letting Google know that you’re an authority in your industry.

Mistake 4: They Don’t Have a Repeatable Process for SEO

SEO is not a “one-and-done” project. It’s an ongoing process that, when done consistently, will drive more traffic and leads to your website.

If some of your web pages are performing much better than other pages, a different formula was likely used on those pages than the others.

Identifying what works and what doesn’t will help you create a strategic plan for success.

Yoga Studios SEO Services Shouldn't Be 🍪 Cookie-Cutter — Everything Is 100% Customized To Your Business

Yoga studio SEO is not the same as other types of SEO. Unfortunately, many other SEO companies treat it that way. They use the same old tricks that they use in other industries, thinking that it’ll work with yoga studios. That’s not the best way to do it.

We treat your business as one-of-a-kind. We take an individualized approach to each industry (such as yoga studios), to your specific city (Portland might be different than a smaller town in Iowa), and to your specific website (is your website built on WordPress or Webflow?).

5 Tactical Local SEO Strategies for Yoga Studios

Strategy 1: Google Business Profile Optimizations

This is an example of a yoga studio’s Google Business Profile:

yogastudioseo

Well, this is an example of the front end of a Google Business Profile. The part that a Google searcher can see.

But, before we go any further, let’s back up:

Why do yoga studios need a Google Business Profile? Google Business Profiles are relevant and important ranking factors if you want to rank in the Google Local Pack (and trust us, you do). If you forgot what the Google Local Pack is, below is a screenshot:

yogastudiolp

Optimizing your Google Business Profile helps you get found here.

And when you rank in the Google Local Pack, you WIN. You get more phone and website traffic than your competitors.

So, how would you go about optimizing your Google Business Profile so you show up in the Google Local Pack?

The answer is … are you ready for it? Comprehensiveness.

The best way to make your Google Business Profile stand out is to provide as much comprehensive information as possible.

These are some of the sections that you can provide comprehensive information::

  • Your categories
  • Your main description
  • Your services
  • Your products
  • Your photos

Let’s look at a quick example that shows the difference between being comprehensive and not being comprehensive:

For your main description, you may just be inclined to write a sentence like… “We are a team of yoga instructors ready to help you get better at your yoga practice.”

That is just one sentence… Google allows 750 characters for the main description. Use them up! Do you offer different types of yoga? Do you give classes for beginners? What about training new yoga instructors? Do you have an onsite shop for yoga supplies?

Answering EVERY possible question is how you can be more comprehensive.

Strategy 2: On-Page SEO for Your Homepage and Location Pages

On-page SEO for yoga studios is just a fancy way of describing the content on your website.

It includes things like:

  • Your title tags
  • Your meta description
  • Your header tags (H1, H2, H3)
  • Internal and external links
  • Your images
  • And basically, anything that you can put on a website page!

Does on-page SEO for yoga studios matter? If you ask Google, the answer would be yes.

For single-location yoga studios, the most important page on your website, from a local SEO perspective, is the homepage. For multi-location yoga studios, the most important pages on your website are your location pages.

Your on-page SEO for these pages should include SEO-friendly keywords as well as comprehensive information for both the user and Google.

For example, instead of a title tag like “Yoga With Sarah – 503.111.1111” you can provide more context to Google by writing something like “Downtown Portland’s Premier Yoga Classes – Yoga With Sarah.”

Strategy 3: Website Architecture Best Practices

This may be one of the more underrated strategies for yoga studio SEO. Your website architecture and sitemap are deeply connected.

Google will crawl your sitemap to get a handle on your website architecture, which, in turn, allows Google to learn what your website is about.

Here’s what a sitemap looks like to Google.

yogaseoservices

It might seem a little confusing but don’t sweat it. Just remember that when Google sees a sitemap like this, it’s trying to understand what your website is about. This is important for SEO.

Mainly, you want your website structure to make sense hierarchically. Let’s use two of the main services yoga studios offer — 1) classes and 2) wellness services.

Now let’s determine where these pages will live on your site. First, you should have a “services” page that has a URL structure similar to .com/services/

Next, any services offered (such as classes, retreats, nutritional, etc.) should live UNDER this main services page. See below:

  • .com/services/classes/
  • .com/services/retreats/
  • .com/services/nutrition/

While this may seem obvious, it’s often done wrong on many websites. There’s no vertical architecture and everything lives under the homepage, such as:

  • .com/classes/
  • .com/retreats/
  • .com/nutrition/

Without the proper structure, Google cannot tell that “retreats” are a service that you offer. It’s just another page on your site!

Strategy 4: Content Creation at Scale

This is where the fun begins. Yoga lovers and yoga-curious clients are searching for thousands of questions on Google every day.

Some are very local, such as:

  • Best yoga studio in Portland
  • Best place to do outdoor yoga in Portland

Some are generic:

  • Is yoga good for heart health?
  • Can I do yoga while pregnant?
  • Do I have to be barefoot to do yoga?
  • What are the best yoga pants?

When you provide answers to these types of questions through comprehensive blog articles on your website, it will do 2 things:

  1. You have a better chance of ranking on Google for these keywords that people are searching for and therefore drive more traffic to your site.
  2. Google sees your website as an authority above your competitors. Google’s algorithm sees that you’re answering all of these yoga-related questions that users have. That makes your website more valuable than local competitors who haven’t answered any questions.

Strategy 5: User Experience is a Bigger Deal Than You Think - Stop the Keyword Stuffing!

The old days are gone. Keyword stuffing… PBN link building… all the stuff that used to work doesn’t work anymore.

Google’s getting wiser. And Google now understands that a user’s experience on a website is important.

What does this mean for you as a yoga studio?

  • Make it simple for potential clients to find what they’re looking for. They shouldn’t have to spend 5 minutes figuring out if you offer nutrition services or not.
  • Make it easy for users to find and contact you. Your phone number should be clickable on a mobile device. You should consider online scheduling so someone can easily book a spot in their preferred class. You should provide a link to Google Maps so users can find your studio. Anything to make the user’s experience SUPER easy.

When writing content, always aim to offer value to the reader. Forget outsourcing writers who produce vague, keyword-stuffed articles. Your content should thoroughly answer the user’s specific questions and add value to them.

FAQs About Yoga Studios SEO Services

Here are the most common questions we’ve heard.

What Is Yoga Studio SEO?

Yoga studio SEO is a form of marketing that helps yoga studios and Instructors increase their visibility in search engines — particularly Google.

The specific SEO strategies that are used for yoga studios vary greatly (which is why all yoga studio SEO is NOT created equal).

Strategies include:

  • Keyword research
  • On-page SEO
  • Off-page SEO
  • Google Maps optimizations
  • Local SEO
  • Content creation
  • Landing page creation
  • PR
  • And more

Why Is Yoga Studio SEO Important?

Yoga studio SEO is important because it allows you to be visible to your target audience (the yoga students looking to find a studio RIGHT NOW).

Think about how social media marketing for yoga studios works: People are scrolling through their socials and stumble upon an advertisement for a yoga studio in their city. They might be actively looking for a studio, but it’s unlikely.

On the other hand, SEO puts you in front of motivated clients looking for what you have to offer:

SEO for yoga studios allows you to rank in Google for people actively looking for a studio. People searching for “best yoga studio near me” or “yoga studio in downtown Portland.” Ranking for those keywords has a MUCH higher conversion rate than people scrolling on social media.

How Long Does SEO for Yoga Studios Take to Work?

Yoga Studio SEO can take 1 week to 6 months for you to start seeing results. It depends on a variety of factors:

  • How big your city is
  • How long your website has been active
  • How high your website’s “domain authority” is
  • How your current SEO is performing
  • And much more

Some of our clients have seen 2x – 3x the phone calls within a month after starting their SEO campaign. Other clients don’t see noticeable increases in phone calls for 2-3 months.

Think about this, though:

If everyone could simply make a few tweaks on their website and suddenly rank overnight for the MOST VALUABLE keywords out there, like “best yoga studio in New York City,” then the internet would go haywire.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is quality SEO for yoga studios. Google built its algorithms that way for good reason.

What Yoga Studio SEO KPIs Should We Track?

Yoga studio SEO should be meticulously tracked.

You should know, with absolute certainty, that your investment in SEO is working for your yoga studio.

Because of that, you need to track certain metrics to ensure that the campaign is working:

  • Keyword rankings: Are your ranking at the top of Google’s SERP for your most important keywords? How are your keyword rankings changing week over week? Month over month?
  • Organic website traffic: Is your organic website traffic from Google going up or down? Which keywords are driving the most traffic?
  • Online lead submissions: Are you seeing more online leads? How are they changing month over month?

Phone calls: Are you getting more phone calls from people searching on Google? How are phone calls changing over time?

What Type of Content Should Yoga Studio Websites Have?

Yoga studio SEO should include content that your target audience is searching for:

How do we know what keywords/content your target audience is searching for? We use complex software and third-party tools that give us insider information and data. We, for example, know that 1,600 people per month (on average) search for “what does yoga do for your body?”

So, with that being said, we do extensive keyword research to find the topics/questions that yoga clients have.

Questions like:

  • “Where did yoga originate?”
  • “What is goat yoga?”
  • “What to wear to yoga?

When you create content that answers these queries, you have a better chance of ranking on Google and increasing your domain authority.

Google will favor your site more than competitors because Google will see that you’re providing comprehensive, trustworthy information.
